What is the Difference Between a Water Softener and a Water Filter?
Water softeners and water filters serve different purposes. Water softeners are designed to remove minerals from water, while water filters are designed to remove impurities. Both types of devices can be used to improve the quality of your water, but they work in different ways.
Water softeners use a process called ion exchange to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium from your water. These minerals can cause problems like scale build-up and hard water stains. Water softeners replace the minerals in your water with other harmless ions, leaving your water softer and gentler on your skin and hair.
Hard water shows up in many ways from spots on dishes to limescale on drains. What you don’t see is the build-up inside the pipes that accumulates and causes undue pressure increasing the chance of leaks. Our water softening systems prevent more damage and revitalize your existing pipes.
Water filters (also known as a water purifier), on the other hand, trap impurities in their filter media. Dirty water and impurities existing in your water can contribute to allergy symptoms and disease. Unfortunately, the San Antonio water supply is one of the most toxic water supplies in the state of Texas according to The Environmental Working Group. At Elmer’s Home Services we provide several solutions to improve the quality of water in your home.
A water purifier can remove things like dirt, rust particles, and chlorine. Water filters don’t remove minerals from your water, but they can make your water taste and smell better by removing these impurities.
If you’re not sure which type of device you need, or if you need both, the experts at Elmer’s Home Services can help. We offer free in-home water tests to help you determine which solutions are right for your home. We also offer a variety of water softeners and water filters to meet your needs.

Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a type of water filtration that removes impurities from water by forcing it through a semipermeable membrane. RO systems are designed to remove a wide range of contaminants, including dissolved minerals, bacteria, and viruses.
A reverse osmosis system can also include filters to increase the pH of your drinking water.
Iron Breakers
If you have iron in your water, an iron breaker can help. Iron breakers remove dissolved iron from your water, which can cause staining and other problems. Iron breakers use a process called oxidation to remove iron from your water.
Iron, Manganese, and Tannins are responsible for rust discoloration in rust, and sulfur smells we have all experienced before. Our Iron Breaker system naturally eliminates these issues without toxins, chemicals, or filters.
